Before + After : Living Room Carpet Removal

The living room was one of the more difficult rooms. The wood floor is extremely solid and some of the nails did not want to leave their home; imbedded in the floor. It for me was one of the most dramatic changes.

The “Before Moving In” / “Real Estate photos” get me every time … so much hidden potential.

Master Bedroom – Before + After the Removal of the Carpet

The carpets upstairs were easier to remove in most of the bedrooms because they were just set down on top of linoleum aside from in one room. Now the linoleum was a pain to pull up as it was so dirty but it to wasn’t too hard to literally pull up as there wasn’t any glue used. They used these plastic strips with mini little pins. All in the upstairs we had to take pliers and pull out the little pins.

The First Step – Get Rid of The Carpet

So we moved in, well sort of, we acquired the place in May and slept here the first night on an air mattress. We didn’t really move in officially for quite some time. Truthfully we are still in boxes and do not have all our things here yet. :S My father had been in the hospital with pancreatitis on and off for over a year many of those months in ICU; “on” the latest time for 1 year and 11 days. He was being released from the hospital in June and our closing was May 7, 2014. So we stayed at my Dad’s farm with his wife on and off for a few months trying to help out where we could. We eventually moved here full time.

Each time we came to the house, I got sick. Earlier in the year, I think March/April I had a bought of pneumonia and it takes awhile to completely disappear. I am “allergic” to cigarette smoke as well as dust. I have a form of Dysautonomia, called Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, a disorder called Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and suspected MCD, Mast Cell Disorder along with a plethora of other medical conditions that all became disabling after a fall and hit to the head. I received a major concussion and severe whiplash in my neck. It’s been a long journey but I’m working away at it still. Anyways, doing almost anything in life can be difficult and I have many ill days but this house was making me very ill. I felt like I was going to have another bout of pneumonia, chest infections, bronchitis … the usual. The former occupants were major smokers and the house was more laden with smoke residue than I thought.

My bf, didn’t believe me in the beginning that the ceiling tiles were not meant to be yellow until we moved and he saw the close up. Ekkkk. More to come on all of that.

Anyways, the carpets here were a “special” decor element (see the before real estate photo of the stairs below and a few shots I took when we viewed the place or check out the before section), disgusting with so many stains and filled with tons of dust, dirt and cigarette odours. Before we bought the place, we knew the first thing we wanted to do before bringing the things into the house was to remove carpet. We contemplated having a party first so people could trash them more but with Dad coming home, a party was put to the back burner and eventually forgotten about. We attacked the carpet in the first week but it took a long time to finish, even the bathroom and kitchen had carpet in them.
